What is an Inuksuk?

An Inuksuk is a pile of rocks in the shape of a person. Inuk means 'person' and suk means ‘substitute’ in the Inuit language. The inuksuk was used by the Inuit in Canada to show people the way, to warn people of danger ahead, as a memorial sign or as a helpful tool at the caribou hunt. The Inuksuk stands for Inuit power, leadership and motivation.

Through our travels and expeditions, we are more than ever convinced that nature is a perfect teacher. When travelling through pristine wilderness, over high mountains or on rough seas, you immediately feel humble, a state of mind we tend to loose in this 21first high-tech century where we think we can conquer anything !

Being outdoors, you appreciate your shelter, food and water, and you appreciate more than ever true friendship. One learns when to travel and when to stay put and listen to the teachings of the weather elements. One doesn't ‘conquer’ a mountain; the mountain lets one walk on it.

Through our INUKSUK website we want to share with you our adventures and respect for mother Earth. We invite you to use your 5 senses and start to witness what nature can provide you: a never ending teaching book. Happy trails, Bert & Kiki

fuerzaAtacama para Tomé - A tsunami of solidarity
Waking up on Saturday morning 27/2/2010 with the terrible news of the earthquake in Chile was a very bad surprise for all of us. As well for Bert, who was about to take off for his Atacama crossing in Chile as for his Chilean friends from his hometown Leuven this was very traumatic news…

So we decided to join our strength and creativity to do something special for Chile. Zeepreventorium did  feel the same and so we decided to work together to get as  fast as possible a project started to help the victims of the earthquake in Chile. We did choose for a project in the small coast city of Tomé in the south of Chile. The region where the earthquake and the tsunami hit very powerful and destroyed almost everything.

Tomé is a commune and port city with 52.000 inhabitants, in the Biobío Region of Chile, not far from Concepcion. The local economy is based mainly on textile manufacturing and fishing industry.

Follow this link for pictures of Tomé before and after the earthquakehttp://ayudaparatome.zobyhost.com/photosf.html

Our contact person over there in Tomé is Gloria Vasquez a Chilean Belgian  doctor who was living about twenty years in Leuven before  returning back to  her country of origin to work there in  the hospital of Tomé as a medical doctor.

Wednesday 3 march 2010
Bert Poffé, together with the ZEEPREVENTORIUM and our Chilean friends (Jorge, Pato, Nelson & Mimi) of Leuven, decided to, from today on, walk-race and raise funds for the victims of the earthquake in Chile!

If you want to collaborate at our project  “Atacama for Tomé “ or you have another aid project  for Chile  you can just join us. Together we can do more !!!

We will soon organize  benefits in Leuven and Brussels with Chilean artist and other activities…

Your donation to “Atacama  para Tomé” is Bert's motivation!
