Last weekend, supporting the NATURE FOR LIFE EVENT, Roy Perritt, my Canadian soul mate and brother in (adventurous) arms and I did a 3 days training session in the NATIONAL PARK HOGE KEMPEN, preparing for the Atacama Crossing 2010.
Being a ranger, hunting guide and trapper himself, Roy was delighted to meeting the Rangers of the only Belgian National Park.
On Friday I took Roy from the airport, straight to the Park where we were welcomed by a delegation of Rangers and the organization team of the NATURE FOR LIFE EVENT.
After a welcome ceremony with a local jenever in a teepee, I told Roy the best way to shake off the jet lag was a good “walk in the Park” as a start. He didn’t argue and I took it as a “let’s go”. So, we went to the gate “Kattevennen” where we did a 17K fast march.
On Saturday we took off at the gate “Mechelse Heide” and within less than 7 hours we covered more than 37kms.
Sunday was D day for NATURE FORE LIFE. Thousands of nature enthusiasts, bikers, hikers and horse riders enjoyed the “Indian Summer” in the park.
By Sunday evening we had “collected 74+ kilometers and felt strong and fit, but …we couldn’t deny a bunch of blisters.
This was just what we needed, learning some lessons the hard way. Top priority for the next couple of days will be finding out which combination of socks and shoes will do for ATACAMA.

Rest, at least (or more) as important as training ! |

Many athletes I know out there are training long hours every day, week after week after week!
Good training and hard workouts are necessary for endurance races such as The Atacama Crossing! But don’t forget, resting is at least as vital! Do constantly watch out for asking too much from your own body.
First thing to do is to get enough sleep : try to sleep at least 8 hours per night . Especially in your sleep the recovery of your body takes place. Preferably you take a light meal or nutritional shake before you go to bed to provide your body the necessary building stones needed for your recovery.
Second tip : endurance training asks for many hours of training, the load of your body is enormous. Therefore , after three weeks of building up you take one step back – till 30 % - in the fourth week. In duration and in intensity. Then you can start building up again. And remember : the golden rule here is never more than 10 % a week in your training building.
Have fun and sleep well!
Rudi

Preparing for Atacama, I read whatever I can find to have at least an idea about what to expect when taking part in an ultra run.
I came across “Born To Run”, a book about an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt?
In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, the Tarahumara. A story about the American First Nations and running combined, exactly what I needed to really get inspired!
Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of kilometers without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner while enjoying every kilometer of it. Their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity.
The Tarahumara and the other runners in this story have one thing in common, they don’t run for money, they don’t run for glory, they run because they adore running! It’s no training, it’s no workout, it’s fun!
Born to Run even made me realize why I like running: When I run, I feel free, and when I feel free, I run!
