What is an Inuksuk?

An Inuksuk is a pile of rocks in the shape of a person. Inuk means 'person' and suk means ‘substitute’ in the Inuit language. The inuksuk was used by the Inuit in Canada to show people the way, to warn people of danger ahead, as a memorial sign or as a helpful tool at the caribou hunt. The Inuksuk stands for Inuit power, leadership and motivation.

Through our travels and expeditions, we are more than ever convinced that nature is a perfect teacher. When travelling through pristine wilderness, over high mountains or on rough seas, you immediately feel humble, a state of mind we tend to loose in this 21first high-tech century where we think we can conquer anything !

Being outdoors, you appreciate your shelter, food and water, and you appreciate more than ever true friendship. One learns when to travel and when to stay put and listen to the teachings of the weather elements. One doesn't ‘conquer’ a mountain; the mountain lets one walk on it.

Through our INUKSUK website we want to share with you our adventures and respect for mother Earth. We invite you to use your 5 senses and start to witness what nature can provide you: a never ending teaching book. Happy trails, Bert & Kiki

Atacama Crossing Chile 2010
Stage 5 update from Bert PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 13 March 2010 13:56
Hola a todos,

Yesterday we started at 07:40 and arrived 76 long kilometers later at about at 01:40 in the morning.

I kind of collapsed at about 300 meters before the finnish line, so I did hide behind a corner to recover and made sure nobody would take me out of the race.

Today we have to run the last 10K into San Pedro. Don t know how, you would understand if you would be able to see my feet.

Anyway, the last couple of days I tried to keep you updated a bit, but only today I read the messages today, must be also the fatigue, but this is becoming way to emotional.

Guille, casi la tenemos en la mano!

Un beso
Bert

The stage is roughly 75 kilometers and most competitors will finish late into the night. The first 45 kilometers are the most arduous.

If competitors make it through today, they will only have a short 10 kilometers into the finish line in the Town Square of San Pedro de Atacama tomorrow.

Stage 4: There are only a handful of competitors remaining on the course.

Recent arrivals include: Linda Quirk of the United States, Marilena Wilkinson of Venezuela, Lucy Rivers-Bulkeley of the United Kingdom, Maya Restis of the United States, Billy Restis of the United States, Kristina Narusk of Estonia, Keir Oxley of Australia, Janelle Pham of the United States and Chizuko Kida of Japan.

The campsite has been blanketed by fierce winds. Many in the middle of the pack suffered mightily during the salt flats, but those at the front and the end of the pack seemed to handle the terrain and heat better. The final competitors are expected to cross the finish line of Stage 4 shortly.
