What is an Inuksuk?

An Inuksuk is a pile of rocks in the shape of a person. Inuk means 'person' and suk means ‘substitute’ in the Inuit language. The inuksuk was used by the Inuit in Canada to show people the way, to warn people of danger ahead, as a memorial sign or as a helpful tool at the caribou hunt. The Inuksuk stands for Inuit power, leadership and motivation.

Through our travels and expeditions, we are more than ever convinced that nature is a perfect teacher. When travelling through pristine wilderness, over high mountains or on rough seas, you immediately feel humble, a state of mind we tend to loose in this 21first high-tech century where we think we can conquer anything !

Being outdoors, you appreciate your shelter, food and water, and you appreciate more than ever true friendship. One learns when to travel and when to stay put and listen to the teachings of the weather elements. One doesn't ‘conquer’ a mountain; the mountain lets one walk on it.

Through our INUKSUK website we want to share with you our adventures and respect for mother Earth. We invite you to use your 5 senses and start to witness what nature can provide you: a never ending teaching book. Happy trails, Bert & Kiki

Our Mongolian “Khuvsgul Dogsled expedition” was an experience we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. Getting to the start point was an expedition itself, 700 kilometers on roads, only existing on the roadmap of Mongolia, several flat tires and other mechanical problems ....

loghouseWe just arrived home after a very long day of flying.

Thank you all very much for the many messages of support during our expedition. Communication hasn't been always easy.

Of course we haven't climbed the Monk Saridag on a horse. We first went from Khatgal to the beginning of the climb by horse, from there we climbed to about 3200 m where we set up our basecamp, on the following day, April the 10th, we got to the Saridag summit.

Back on the Khuvsgul lake we were received by the nomads with a lot of respect and of course superb food to celebrate our Saridag climb.

After the expedition which ended on April the 15th, we spend 2 days at Joel and Bayana's loghouse in Terelj, about 2 hours from UB. (see picture)

A detailed update on our expedition and pictures will follow soon!

De nomaden achterna - Pasar PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 01 April 2009 07:18

Flights and logistics: Adventure pur sang PDF Print E-mail

There is only one flight a week between Ulaanbaatar and Moron. Due to late decisions on the winter to “summer” shift of internal flight schedules, some logistical last minute changes had to be made.

Training with a world Champion PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 16 March 2009 13:21
championDuring this preparation period for our expedition every little detail is carefully studied, gear is being tested and many hours are spent working out in the gym and running and hiking in the woods.

For our expedition, the one extremely difficult thing to train here in Belgium is the dog sledding itself, (almost) no snow, (almost) no dogs! One would (almost) forget we have an European and World Champion amongst us: Joël Reyniers! Please check out Joël’s website: http://www.runbeforebeauty.be/

After a couple of phone calls Joël was so kind to spend a morning dogsled training with me. We ran the dogs for about an hour and a half and we talked about the do’s and don’t’s of mushing. Although, far from being comparable to the Mongolian cold, the 4°C felt “extreme” on this stormy wet, and above all, muddy morning.
The hauling of the dogs brought back sweet (Canadian) memories.

It was awesome!

Thank you Joël!

Offsetting our carbon footprint PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 13 March 2009 12:57
indiaprojectOn the 2nd of April, our flight route will be Brussels – Prague - Moscow - Ulaanbatar - Moron.
On the 4th of April we will be “ready to go”!

Unfortunately all flights have an important carbon footprint and thus an impact on climate change. In order to reduce this impact we will offset the CO2 emissions from this expedition by supporting a UNFCCC certified renewable energy project with CO2logic.

Together with Antoine from CO2logic we decided to support the following biomass project in India: http://www.co2logic.com/home.aspx/en/projects/project+4

Our Mukluks PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 09 March 2009 18:12
muksWhile on a nine month Canadian Arctic Dogsled Expedition in 1982-83, traveling from village to village, Patti Steger’s focus was on native culture and the respective skills. It was during that time she wore her first pair of mukluks, marveled at the warmth and comfort and learned to hand-sew both mukluks and moccasins from the native women. In 1985, she began making the footwear in her home for people who would provide the leather.

Patti listened to our needs for the upcoming Khuvsgul Dogsled Expedition and provided us with all the necessary information. We opted for the “Arctic Ribbon Mukluks.

Mukluks or Kamik are soft boots, traditionally made of reindeer skin or sealskin and were originally worn by Arctic aboriginals, including the Inuit and Yupik. The word "mukluk" is of Yupik origin, from maklak, the bearde seal, while "kamik" is an Inuit word. Mukluks weigh little and allow hunters to move very quietly. Our Steger Arctic Mukluks, an example of ancient high tech, will be one ot the most important items to cope with the extreme temperatures of the Mongolian winter!

Dixie Dansercoer PDF Print E-mail

dixieThe well known Arctic and Antarctic Belgian explorer Dixie Dansercoer and his wife Julie Brown have always been a source of inspiration to us! They are explorers with a heart for our mother Earth.

Find out more on www.circles.cc and www.antarcticmatters.com.

With a feeling of happiness we found out what Dixie said about our upcoming dogsled expedition:

“The adventurous soul never gets lost. Neither in the chaos of society, nor in the complexities of switching over to the simplicity of far-away places. The draw of a simplified life and the intricacies of tribal and cultural differences seem to be the red line through Bert and Kiki’s adventures. More than that, their respect and humility towards the people who open the doors to their world, allow for in-depth experiences. I wish them much-deserved success during this next adventure!”

But as we all know by now, Global Warming is affecting us all, also Mongolia and Khuvsgul.

Rimfaxe of Klättermusen PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 02 February 2009 11:22
rimfaxeLillo Buyle from “KARIBOE" recommended us the Rimfaxe of Klättermusen for our upcoming Mongolian expedition.

It’s our new survival jacket in organic fluorocarbon-free cotton” says Lillo ; “Taped waterproof garments are not the optimal choice for winter or high altitude conditions”.

The wind resistance (MFR 8) of Rimfaxe is more than adequate for the hardest of winds, something that has been tested on several expeditions to the North Pole. In wind speeds of 10 m/s it transports ten times more moisture than a laminated garment.

Rimfaxe is a garment with the highest levels of safety. It has frostbite protection for the face and covers the groin to reduce heat loss. Strong 8 mm zippers with safety covers and Velcro are backed up by storm toggles for extreme situations. Lillo:“It will certainly do the job for you folks”.

We are of course delighted with the fact that these high tec winter jackets, provided by KARIBOE, are made of organic eco-friendly materials.
