What is an Inuksuk?

An Inuksuk is a pile of rocks in the shape of a person. Inuk means 'person' and suk means ‘substitute’ in the Inuit language. The inuksuk was used by the Inuit in Canada to show people the way, to warn people of danger ahead, as a memorial sign or as a helpful tool at the caribou hunt. The Inuksuk stands for Inuit power, leadership and motivation.

Through our travels and expeditions, we are more than ever convinced that nature is a perfect teacher. When travelling through pristine wilderness, over high mountains or on rough seas, you immediately feel humble, a state of mind we tend to loose in this 21first high-tech century where we think we can conquer anything !

Being outdoors, you appreciate your shelter, food and water, and you appreciate more than ever true friendship. One learns when to travel and when to stay put and listen to the teachings of the weather elements. One doesn't ‘conquer’ a mountain; the mountain lets one walk on it.

Through our INUKSUK website we want to share with you our adventures and respect for mother Earth. We invite you to use your 5 senses and start to witness what nature can provide you: a never ending teaching book. Happy trails, Bert & Kiki

Zeepreventorium runs Atacama Crossing PDF Print E-mail

On november 6 Bert Poffé will meet the "Zeepreventorium Atacama competitors"!

zee_veroExactly!  When patients heard about Bert's upcoming  challenge, they decided to have the same challenge. Together with counsellors and physiotherapist we’re having our own Atacama!

This way we want to give Bert the necessary extra positive energy and convince other people that moving is healthy.

2 challenges have been set up.

Veronique, an adult patient suffering from Cystic Fibrosis, waiting for new lungs (lungtransplantation), started the challenge to run the whole Atacama distance by the time that Bert starts in Chile. She ‘ll be doing it with oxygen- and Bi-livel respiratory support.

The Piranhas group is a group of patients suffering from obesity, between the age of 16 and 18 years old. During the week  that Bert is in the Atacama desert, they will do their own Atacama Run. Each indivudual will cover 250 kms! The coming months they will train hard to be in the best shape ever for this project!.

In the coming weeks you’ll be able to follow Veronique’s improvements and the Piranhas training on this blog.

Bert, let’s go for it, together !!

More than just a backpack ! PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 October 2009 11:37
raidlightLess than six months separate me from finding myself running around with a backpack in the Atacama Desert.
On the Atacama Crossing, a backpack is not just a backpack, it's your life. Everything you need for the week is in there!
The right choice when picking a good backpack, your closest friend in the race, is vital!

No time for fooling around and fun ‘gear testing’. Having faith in what experienced ultra runners tell me about this backpack, I opted for the Raidlight Runner R-LIGHT 30 l, a record breaker in lightness for this multipurpose backpack designed for long racing events and hikes.

The right food for the Challenge. PDF Print E-mail

Katarina_smAll competitive athletes know that not only the right attitude and training are required when preparing for a game or competition, the food part is also crucial when you want to be in the best shape possible. That is why we are providing Bert with the right proteins in order to build and strengthen his muscles in a safe and delicious way during his precious preparation time leading up to the big challenge: crossing the Atacama desert safe and sound without injuries.

Daily, Bert is drinking 2 healthy shakes with the Sun Warrior Rice Protein (www.healthxl.be) adding some fruits or greens for extra flavour. After the first week, he noticed a big difference compared to regular whey and soy protein powders: very digestible, no bloating and faster recovery, just to name a few. Right now, he's just started his 4th bottle, I guess that's a sign he really likes the results + the taste :-)

What makes Sun Warrior Rice Protein so special? It contains 85% protein, it's totally vegan without soy or whey and on top of it all, it is tasteful. You can combine it with anything you want: as a base you can use water or any kind of milk, then you can add fresh fruits like bananas and strawberries, some green leafy vegetables or green powder, cacao powder, .... Get creative and gain muscle the healthy way!

In the meantime, Bert enrolled for a workshop on healthy superfoods on October 31st , in Mechelen with my good friends David Wolfe and Piter Caizer.

Good Luck Bert !!
